WHO ARE WE?

Founded in 1996, the Halifax Regional Police Youth Program is a volunteer based non-profit program for youth age 14 - 19 interested in policing. The Program offers a structured learning atmosphere and teaches citizenship with an emphasis on leadership and voluntary service to the community.

WHERE DO WE OPERATE?

The Program operated in the areas within the Halifax Regional Municipality presently served by the Halifax Regional Police. A unit is currently present in the community of Dartmouth. They also offer support to other areas within the Municipality. Interested youth can apply to the closest Unit.

WHAT WE DO

There are seven Program Elements each unit is responsible to explore during the program year. These elements are: Health, Environment, Community, Vocation, Justice, Education, and Ethics.

It is these topics that give each Unit its unique flavor and individuality. They allow for exploration beyond policing to make participation in the program a much broader experience for all members.

Since most participants had an interest in policing, the primary function of the program is developing citizenship. Most cadets will go on not to police careers, but to other walks of life. Skills obtained while in the program will provide a foundation for building the necessary life skills to be productive caring members of society.

Activities consist of but are not limited to Bike Patrol, Volunteer Services, Personal Development and Recreational Activities.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

A guiding principal of the program is to provide membership to all those wishing to participate regardless of economic situation, race, religion, etc. At present there is a yearly fee of $60.00 for new members, $40.00 for renewing members. This fee is waived if the participant cannot afford it. Uniforms are provided by the program to all members at the programs expense.
